The Margate Exodus

Margate, a small seaside town blighted with bad luck and misfortune since the arrival of abroad package holidays in the 60’s looks set again to become the focus of cultures eyes, if only for a mere few days.

The 19th Century had the residency of Britain’s most famous artist, JMW Turner, the 20th the emergence of Tracey Emin, and her micro-nationalistic tendencies, but now in the 21st century, Margate is set to be invaded by some of the cream of Britain’s artistic exponents.

Indeed if Margate has to wait another century before their next big art happening (which hopefully they won’t with the building of The Turner Contemporary) then at least locals who will experience this will be able to reel off names such as Scott Walker, Brian Eno and Anthony Gormley as people who graced the sands with their abundance of artistic talent.

All of these names will perform under Artangel who are responsible for The Margate Exodus. Essentially a re-enactment of Exodus from the old testament but set in modern day Margate, but with a twist, as the re-enactment shown live of Channel 4.

It might all be a bit to unreal to grasp and believe, so with that in mind, www.themargateexodus.org.uk is the place to go to, to see what will be happening on the 30th September and 1st October 2006. Other information is available at http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/nwh_gfx_en/ART37679.html. If however you are a local resident to Margate, there is a HQ at the very top of the high street if you fancy seeing things for yourself and maybe getting involved.

My only fears are again that certain locals, who for example have been against the building of The Turner Contemporary will again try to ruin something for the people of the Isle of Thanet, which is potentially great. But there’s a different story altogether.

People of Margate rejoice, as the biggest artistic event of the year is about to happen on your doorstep.
